NAVASOTA BLUES FEST- Ryan Hertz [ 6/9/2006 - 11:15 ] #

Navasota, Texas
In 2005 the State of Texas named Navasota – Blues Capital of Texas – and we sure hope to live up to that name.
2006 will be the eleventh year for the Navasota Blues Fest. This event is held annually in memory of Mance Lipscomb, Songster. Local, regional and out-of-state musicians gather for the two-day event to pay tribute to this remarkable musician. The festival draws people from all over Texas – and usually some patrons from out-of-state. Some of the volunteers who have helped for years come from far away; Jessie Garcia and Cindi Guido from San Antonio; Jo Crawford and George Wilder from Elmhurst, Illinois. This is dedication!
The Fest will be held on Friday, August 11th and Saturday, August 12th at the Grimes County Expo Center (formerly Grimes County Fairgrounds). Price for Friday will be $8.00 per person. Friday will be kicked off starting at 6:00pm until 7:00pm with a cocktail hour with the musicians. Free appetizers will be served, and beer will be ½ price for this hour. Then at 7:00pm the OLD TIME BLUES BASH begins with The Blues Brothers, a Tribute Act from Houston, Texas. They will be followed with Tubie & The Touchtones and then Blind Orange & The Seeing Eye Band will carry the event until midnight.
Saturday, August 12th will start with a showing of a documentary of Mance – “A Well-Spent Life”, at 12:30pm. Admission on Saturday will be $17.00 per person. Continuous musicians will begin performing at 1:45pm and end at midnight. Those appearing will be Mike Gallo, Randy Pavlock & Twenty Four Seven of Navasota, Texas; Rob Roy Parnell and The John Gaar Band – all of Austin; Dave Nevling and The Blues Kats and The Brad Absher Band, from Houston; and returning from Lafayette, Louisiana will be David Egan & Twenty Years of Trouble.
Beer, soda, wine coolers, set-ups and water will be available. BYOB – liquor only. Herman Jesse of Crossroads Bar-BQ will once again serve up any number of barbequed meats for your liking. Texas SilverBullets of Houston, Texas will be served fried shrimp and catfish, baked potatoes, roasted corn and much more to keep your appetite appeased.
Musicians will bring their CDs, t-shirts, etc. that will be on sale all weekend. The Blues Fest will have caps, t-shirts and Mance Lipscomb CDs for sale. There will be a raffle and Silent Auction – ending on late Saturday evening.
Plan on having good music, good food, and good times on this August weekend!

| | | TENNESSEE THREE: The Men Behind The Man In Black- Ryan Hertz [ 5/17/2006 - 09:21 ] #
SATURDAY, JULY 22 (8 PM) ROYAL OAK MUSIC THEATRE
Tickets Are Now On Sale! (Royal Oak, May 3, 2006) – The Tennessee Three, the original men behind the man in black, will have audiences reliving the music of Johnny Cash at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on Saturday, July 22 (8 p.m.). Catfish Mafia joins the evening as the opening act. Tickets are now on sale.
The music of the Tennessee Three is as important to the sound and successes of Johnny Cash as his own voice. Providing the sound that powered nearly every Johnny Cash performance and recording since 1960, The Tennessee Three is credited as one of only a handful of musicians, who along with their mentor Johnny Cash, created a truly original and instantly identifiable sound. Citied as inspiration by hundreds of contemporary musicians in virtually every genre including country, rock, punk, rockabilly, pop and more, the legendary members of this band are held in the highest regard by fans and peers alike. Bob Wootton and W.S. Holland are music “legends” in the truest sense of the word. Wootton, who now provides lead vocals, instituted the unique “boom-chicka-boom” guitar that classifies most of Cash’s songs and often accompanied Cash on vocals. Holland holds his own place in music history as the first rock ’n’ roll drummer. Between the two, they are in the running to be nominated for six Grammy Awards for their new release, “We Still Miss Someone.”
The Tennessee Three stage band consists of: Bob Wootton (vocals and lead guitar), W.S. Holland (drums), Vicky Wootton (vocals and rhythm guitar), Scarlett Wootton (vocals) and Lisa Horngren (vocals and upright bass).
Tickets ($22.50) may be purchased at the Royal Oak Music Theatre box office, on-line at www.tickets.com or charged by phone at 1-800-919-6272. For more information, call 248-399-2980 or visit www.royaloakmusictheatre.com. The Royal Oak Music Theatre is located at 318 W. Fourth Street.

| | | Blues Fest to host ‘Saturday Supper' Nov. 19 honoring local Bluesman Lipscomb- Ryan Hertz [ 10/27/2005 - 14:37 ] # Navasota Blues Fest, Inc. is holding a Saturday Night Supper Nov. 19 in honor of Mance Lipscomb, Navasota Bluesman.
“Since
the Saturday Night Suppers were a big part of Mance's life for many
years, we thought it would be nice if we could try to recreate the feel
of good food, good conversation and good music. It won 't be the same
without Mance, but we 'll try,” said Mary Crawford, one of the supper's
organizers.
In 1895, Mance Lipscomb was born into a musical
family and began playing at an early age. His father was a fiddler, his
uncle played the banjo and his brothers were guitarists. His mother
bought him a guitar when he was 11, and soon he was accompanying his
father at the Saturday Night Suppas and Dances.
Mance once
figured that he had been playing at these Saturday night events for 59
years. Sometimes a whole hog would be barbequed for these suppers.
Mance talked of tables being loaded down with food; some tables held
only the meats - pork, beef, chicken and spareribs. Other tables held
the other foods - cakes, apples, peanuts and more. Mance said sometimes
500 to 600 people would be at these Suppas. ... [MORE]
